🧭 Where to Stay in Roatan:

Looking for the Best Place to Stay in Roatan? Start Here

One of the most common questions travelers ask is:
“Where should I stay in Roatan?”

The answer depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for — and in our experience, this decision has a bigger impact on your trip than most people expect.

Roatan offers everything from lively beach scenes to quiet, tucked-away escapes — and choosing the right location can truly shape your entire stay.

📊 Roatan’s Main Areas (A Quick Overview)

Many people say this area is where to stay in Roatan.

“What many visitors don’t realize at first is how different each area feels

— even though everything is relatively close together.”

West Bay

Beautiful Beaches and Resort Living

West Bay is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in Roatan, with soft white sand, calm turquoise water, and easy access to the reef. It’s one of the most developed areas on the island and is home to many of Roatan’s larger resorts and all-inclusive properties.

The beach itself is a major draw, offering ideal conditions for swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the water. There are also restaurants, beach bars, and water activities available throughout the area, making it easy to spend the entire day without leaving the shoreline.

Because of its popularity, West Bay can feel more crowded and commercial than other parts of the island, particularly when cruise ship visitors are in the area. Many accommodations are part of larger resort properties, which can create a more structured and less private experience.

For travelers who want a classic Caribbean beach with full-service amenities and a resort-style environment, West Bay can be a great fit. For those looking for a quieter, more personal experience with fewer crowds and more flexibility, other areas of the island may offer a better overall balance.

Many visitors love it for the beach itself — but are surprised by how busy it can feel during peak times.

West End

Lively, Social, and Walkable

West End is one of the most popular and energetic areas in Roatan, known for its lively atmosphere, walkable layout, and wide variety of restaurants, bars, and dive shops. It’s a great place for travelers who enjoy being close to the action and having everything within easy reach.

The main strip runs along the waterfront, where you’ll find a mix of casual dining, nightlife, and tour operators. It’s also a hub for diving and snorkeling excursions, making it a convenient base for those planning to spend time on the water.

It’s a fun, energetic area — but not always the easiest place to fully relax.

With that convenience and energy comes a busier environment. The area can feel crowded at times, especially during peak travel periods, and accommodations are often closer together with less privacy than in other parts of the island.

For travelers who want a social, active experience with plenty to do just steps away, West End can be a great fit. For those seeking a quieter, more relaxed setting with a bit more space and privacy, other areas of the island may offer a better overall experience.

Mid-Island (Brick Bay to Milton Bight)

Local, Central, and Less Touristy

The mid-island area of Roatan — stretching from Brick Bay through French Harbour and out toward Milton Bight — offers a more local, residential feel compared to the busier west end of the island.

This part of Roatan is home to a mix of communities, marinas, and working areas, along with some restaurants, grocery stores, and access to everyday conveniences. It’s also more centrally located, making it easier to explore different parts of the island by car.

That said, most of the beaches in this area are smaller, less accessible, or not as swimmable as those found on the north and west sides of the island. While there are some waterfront properties and beautiful views, the classic “walk-out-to-the-beach” experience is less common here.

For travelers looking to be immersed in local life and willing to trade beach access for convenience and central location, mid-island can be a good fit. For those prioritizing easy water access, swimmable shoreline, and a more relaxed, vacation-focused setting, other areas of the island may offer a better overall experience.

For many visitors, this area feels more like living on the island than vacationing on it.

This is why many visitors ultimately choose areas along the north shore, where the balance of accessibility, water conditions, and overall experience tends to be stronger.

East End Roatan (Anywhere East Of Milton Bight Is East End)

Remote, Quiet, and Off the Beaten Path

The east end of Roatan offers a very different experience from the more developed areas on the western side of the island. Known for its quiet, natural setting, this part of Roatan appeals to travelers looking to disconnect, explore, and experience a slower, more untouched side of the island.

You’ll find fewer restaurants, limited nightlife, and longer distances between accommodations and activities. While there are some beautiful and secluded waterfront areas, getting around typically requires a rental car, and access to conveniences can be more limited.

For those seeking privacy, solitude, and a more remote island experience, the east end can be incredibly rewarding. For travelers who prefer easy access to dining, activities, and a more walkable or connected environment, it may feel a bit too quiet or removed.

In our experience, the east end is best suited for those who already know they want that level of seclusion — while others may find a better balance in areas that offer both relaxation and accessibility.

Sandy Bay (Gibson Bight)

The Perfect Balance

Sandy Bay, and in particular Gibson Bight, offers what many travelers ultimately realize they’re looking for — a balance of convenience, comfort, and natural beauty without the crowds.

Located just minutes from West End, this area gives you easy access to restaurants, dive shops, and activities, while still feeling noticeably quieter and more relaxed. It’s close enough to enjoy everything the island has to offer, but far enough removed to return to a peaceful, private setting at the end of the day.

The shoreline here is more natural and less developed than West Bay, with calm water and easy access to the reef in many locations. It’s an ideal setting for swimming, kayaking, or simply enjoying the ocean without the busier beach scene found elsewhere on the island.

Another advantage of this location is how consistently enjoyable the water conditions tend to be. Positioned on the leeward side of the island, this area is often more protected from wind and waves, and typically sees less sargassum than more exposed parts of the Caribbean.

For travelers looking for a quieter, more personal experience — with easy access to both the water and nearby activities — Sandy Bay and Gibson Bight offer one of the most well-rounded locations on the island.

This is the area many visitors wish they had chosen after experiencing other parts of the island.

📍 Why We Believe Sandy Bay (Gibson Bight)
Is the Perfect Location

Comparing The East End To Sandy Bay (Gibson Bight)

The East End of Roatan offers a completely different experience from the rest of the island. It’s peaceful, untouched, and far removed from the busier tourist areas — perfect for travelers who truly want to disconnect.

You’ll find:

  • fewer crowds
  • more open space
  • and a slower, more off-the-grid pace

But with that comes trade-offs. Dining options are limited, grocery runs require planning, and getting to popular areas like West End can take 60–80 minutes or more, depending upon road conditions.

While the East End offers unmatched tranquility, many visitors find that Sandy Bay (Gibson Bight) offers a more balanced experience — quiet and scenic, yet just minutes from restaurants, dive shops, and island activities.

👉 It’s the difference between being completely off the grid… and being peacefully tucked away, but close to everything.

đź’Ž Why Sandy Bay Is a Hidden Gem

If you’re looking for a balance of natural beauty, convenience, and tranquility, Sandy Bay — especially the Gibson Bight area — is one of the island’s best-kept secrets.

Sandy Bay offers something that’s getting harder to find in the Caribbean:
space, quiet, and a true connection to nature.

Many guests don’t fully appreciate this balance until they experience it firsthand.

Here, you can:

  • Wake up to the sound of the ocean instead of beach crowds
  • Snorkel directly from shore on the Mesoamerican Reef
  • Enjoy stunning sunsets without competing for a beach chair
  • Experience a more relaxed, authentic side of Roatan

It’s ideal for couples, divers, and anyone who wants to unplug without being isolated.

We Spent 6 Years Looking For The Right Location, And We Believe This Is It.

After years of exploring the island, this is the area we kept coming back to.

People love the Gibson Bight area because we’re just outside the noisy, tourist-filled hustle-bustle of West End. Still, just over one mile to get there when you want a crazy amount of activity, the best restaurants, and an abundance of nightlife.

Sandy Bay, just a few hundred yards down the beach, is a popular community filled with smaller boutique resorts, dive shops, and restaurants, and extends your beach walk by almost two miles.

We’re also just a scenic water taxi ride from the world-famous West Bay Beach (winner of the recent TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Best Beach Award).

People also love this area because there is a Snorkel-Vibrant Reef just offshore — no boats, no demanding schedules, just step into the water and explore.

🧭 Sargassum Seaweed & Ocean Conditions

One question that comes up from time to time is about sargassum seaweed, which has affected some Caribbean destinations more than others in recent years.

Thanks to the local currents and trade winds, Roatan generally sees much less sargassum than many other areas, and the location on the island makes a huge difference. Because Sandy Bay and Gibson Bight sit on the leeward (protected) side of the island, with prevailing easterly winds, any drifting seaweed most often passes by rather than collecting along the shoreline.

While conditions can vary from time to time — as they can anywhere in the Caribbean — this part of the island is known for consistently cleaner, clearer water than more exposed areas. In fact, it’s rare to find any sargassum in this area at all.

For guests, that means a better overall experience — especially if you’re planning to spend time in the water, snorkeling, or simply enjoying the beach.

This is something many travelers don’t consider — but often makes a noticeable difference once they arrive.

The Difference Between the Windward side of the island (the top 2 photos) and the Leeward side of the island (bottom photo) can have a huge impact on your enjoyment while in the ocean. The bottom photo was taken in front of Hummingbird Casitas, which is on the Leeward side of the island. These photos were taken on the exact same day, just a couple of hours apart.

🌊 Snorkeling & Diving Right Outside Your Door

One of the biggest advantages of staying in this area is direct access to the reef.

Instead of:

  • taking a boat
  • navigating crowds
  • scheduling excursions

You can simply:

  • walk into the water
  • and start exploring

Expect to see:

  • tropical fish
  • coral formations
  • occasional rays or turtles, lobsters, conch, eels, or more.

It’s one of the most underrated perks of staying in Gibson Bight. Many guests are surprised this level of access isn’t more common in other Caribbean destinations.
